Winthrop Chandler

Winthrop Chandler (1747 - 1790) was active/lived in Connecticut.  Winthrop Chandler is known for Naive portrait, landscape.

Born in Woodstock, Connecticut in the area of Chandler Hill, Winthrop Chandler became an itinerant and poverty-stricken portrait and ornamental landscape painter. He worked mostly in and around Woodstock and Thompson, Connecticut and in the area of Windham County, Connecticut and Worcester County, Massachusetts. Many of his paintings are large and often are paired portraits of husbands and wives. He often included interior details and items in trompe l'oeil style.

His art education is unknown, although it is possible he studied in Boston. In addition to numerous portraits, he painted many landscapes for over-the-mantels and did other decorations for homes.

He spent the last five years of his life in Worcester, Massachusetts where he lay eight books of gold leaf on the courthouse weathervane.
